Fairly common. Sedentary. In summer found nearer the coast.

Habitat
Open forests, woodlands with grassy clearings. Timbered watercourses. Farmlands, crops, roadsides, orchards and gardens.

Australia (B).

Nest
In a hole of a tree.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 7, usually 5; white; rounded; 26 - 27 x 21 - 22 mm. Incubation: 19 - 20 days; by female.

Young
Fledge in about 35 days.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • icterotis (Kuhl, 1820)   -  Coastal south-western WA.
  • xanthogenys Salvadori, 1891   -  Drier interior of extreme south-western corner of Australia.
