Plat-y-cerc'-us - Gk, platys, flat; Gk, cercos, tail: caledonicus - N.L., of (New) Caledonia (error: the bird does not occur there)

Abundance (Guide)
C

Abundant in most parts of Tasmania. Sedentary, but some localised movement.

Habitat
Forests, woodlands, farmland. Trees along rivers. Briar-scrub, hawthorn hedges, crops, orchards and gardens.

Nest
In a hole of a tree.

Eggs (Guide)
4 or 5 sometimes 6; cream; rounded; about 30 x 24 mm. Incubation: 20 - 22 days; by female.

Young
Nidicolous and probably altricial. Fledge in about 5 weeks.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • caledonicus (Gmelin, JF, 1788)   -  Tasmania and larger islands in Bass Strait.
  • brownii (Kuhl, 1820)   -  King I. (Bass Strait).
