Subspecies
Genus has occasionally been lumped with Aprosmictus. Forms a superspecies with Papuan King-parrot (Alisterus chloropterus).
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
- hypophonius (Müller, S, 1843) - Halmahera in northern Moluccas.
- sulaensis (Reichenow, 1881) - Sula Is.
- versicolor Neumann, 1939 - Peleng in Banggai Is.
- buruensis (Salvadori, 1876) - Buru in southern Moluccas.
- amboinensis (Linnaeus, 1766) - Ambon and Seram in southern Moluccas.
- dorsalis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1832) - Western Papuan Is and western Irian Jaya (western New Guinea).
