Habitat
Forest and thick secondary growth at all altitudes. Also mangroves and fruiting trees in farmland and gardens.

Range (Guide)

Fiji (B).

South-western Fiji, on Viti Levu; also early reports from adjacent Ovalau and Mbau.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 66,000 - 108,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Deforestation and the resulting forest fragmentation is the main threat.

Food
Mostly fruit. Also flowers, insects, seeds and berries.

Voice
A wide variety of raucous, penetrating squawks and screeches, uttered both in flight and when perched.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Only large native parrot on Viti Levu, though there are a small number of naturalised Crimson Shining-Parrot (Prosopeia splendens) from Kadavu and Maroon Shining-Parrot (Prosopeia tabuensis) from Koro, Gau, Vanua Levu and Taveuni, but their red underparts and head are unmistakable.
