Voice
Harsh, screeching 'krraach-krraak' in contact in flight repeated several times. A two-syllablic wailing cry, or a mellow, horn-like 'chu-wee chu-wee', uttered occasionally while feeding. The latter also occasionally uttered in flight. Also a variety of chuckling and bell-like sounds.

In a large hole of a tall tree, often 20 meters or more above the ground.
Eggs (Guide)
2; white; rounded; about 41- 42 x 33 mm. Incubation: about 26 days; by female.
Young
Fledge in about 77 - 84 days.
Subspecies
Subspecies polychloros formerly known as pectoralis, but latter name now considered a synonym of nominate. Proposed subspecies westermani is known only from four aviary specimens of unknown provenance dating from before 1850.
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
vosmaeri (Rothschild, 1922) - Northern and central Moluccas.
roratus (Müller, 1776) - Southern Moluccas.
cornelia Bonaparte, 1850 - Sumba (Lesser Sundas).
riedeli Meyer, AB, 1882 - Tanimbar Is.
aruensis G. R. Gray, 1858 - Aru Is.
biaki (Hartert, 1932) - Biak I.
polychloros (Scopoli, 1786) - New Guinea and adjacent islands and archipelagos.
solomonensis Rothschild & Hartert, 1901 - Admiralty Is, Bismarck Archipelago and Solomon Is.
