Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, swamp forest, shrubland and mangroves. Eucalypt woodlands near rainforest. From sea-level - 800 m.

Australia (B), Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B), Timor-Leste (B) (NB).

Food
Seeds, nuts, fruits and berries.

Voice
A loud, metallic 'aank', repeated rapidly 10 or more times, or 'aank-aank', ending with an upward inflection, uttered continuously in contact in flight. A peculiar guttural chatter or high-pitched screeching uttered when excited.

Nest
In a hollow of a rainforest tree.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 4, usually 3; white; rounded; about 29 x 25 mm. Incubation: by female.

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies sumbavensis and tjindanae are synonyms of floresianus; stresemanni of rhodops; explorator too may be synonymous with rhodops.

One endemic subspecies in Australia, maclennani.

The following 17 subspecies are recognised:

  • cyanicollis (Müller, S, 1841)   -  Northern Moluccas.
  • obiensis (Finsch, 1868)   -  Obi group, north-central Moluccas.
  • rhodops (Schlegel, 1864)   -  Southern Moluccas.
  • explorator Hartert, 1901   -  Seram Laut Is (east of Seram).
  • keyensis Finsch, 1868   -  Kai Is.
  • floresianus Salvadori, 1891   -  Western Lesser Sundas.
  • geoffroyi (Bechstein, 1811)   -  Eastern Lesser Sundas.
  • timorlaoensis Meyer, AB, 1884   -  Tanimbar Is.
  • pucherani Souancé, 1856   -  Western Papuan Is and north-western New Guinea.
  • minor Neumann, 1922   -  Northern New Guinea.
  • jobiensis (Meyer, AB, 1874)   -  Yapen and Meos Num, Geelvink Bay.
  • mysorensis (A. B. Meyer, 1874)   -  Biak and Numfor, Geelvink Bay.
  • orientalis A. B. Meyer, 1891   -  Huon Peninsula (north-eastern New Guinea).
  • sudestiensis De Vis, 1890   -  Misima and Tagula in Louisiade Archipelago.
  • cyanicarpus Hartert, 1899   -  Rossel in Louisiade Archipelago.
  • aruensis (Gray, GR, 1858)   -  Aru Is, southern New Guinea, eastern Papuan islands and extreme northern Queensland.
  • maclennani (MacGillivray, WDK, 1913)   -  Cape York Pen. (north-eastern Australia).
