Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

lorentzi van Oort, 1910 - Snow Mts, central Irian Jaya. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Snow Mountain Tiger-Parrot (Psittacella lorentzi).
excelsa Mayr & Gilliard, 1951 - Montane central Papua New Guinea.
picta Rothschild, 1896 - Montane south-eastern Papua New Guinea.
