Subspecies
Proposed subspecies occidentalis included in nominate.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- intensior (Kinnear, 1928) - Northern Moluccas and Gebe (western Papuan Is).
- placentis (Temminck, 1834) - Southern Moluccas and Aru Is, and through southern New Guinea to Gulf of Papua.
- ornata Mayr, 1940 - Western Papuan Is except Gebe, and northern side of western Irian Jaya.
- subplacens (Sclater, PL, 1876) - North-central New Guinea eastwards.
- pallidior (Rothschild & Hartert, 1905) - Bismarck Archipielago to Bougainville.
