Uncommon. Sedentary and migratory.

Habitat
Dense tropical rainforests, including monsoon forest and open eucalyptus forest up to 1 km from the edge of rainforest.

Australia (B), Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).

Usually solitary.

Food
Insects, precurred in the forest canaopy but often taken from the ground.

A wavering, rattling, musical trill. Mournful, husky, 'wheeer-wheeer-'.

Nest
None. Egg(s) laid in that of the foster parents.

Eggs (Guide)
1; faint pinkish-white, marked all over with spots of mid-brown and fainter pale grey; oval; about 21 x 15 mm. Incubation is carried out by the species whose nest has been parasitised.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • castaneiventris (Gould, 1867)   -  Cape York Peninsula, Torres Strait and Aru Island.
  • arfakianus Salvadori, 1889   -  West Papuan Island and north-western New Guinea, extending east to Mamberamo River, on northern coast and to Fly River on southern coast.
  • weiskei Reichenow, 1900   -  Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea, west to Sepik Region in the north and Utakwa River in the south.


Similar Species
Fan-tailed Cuckoo (Cacomantis flabelliformis) which is noticibly larger.
