Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 2,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda.

Vagrant to Gambia.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-faced Mousebird (Urocolius indicus). Subspecies syntactus often merged with nominate, and laeneni sometimes included too.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • macrourus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Coastal south-western Mauritania and Senegal; recorded also in Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.
  • syntactus (Oberholser, 1905)   -  Sahelian and Sudanese zones from Mali, southern Niger and northern ­Nigeria east to Sudan, Eritrea and northern Ethiopia.
  • laeneni (Niethammer, 1955)   -  Aí¯r Massif, in north-central Niger.
  • abyssinicus Schifter, 1975   -  Central and southern Ethiopia, and northern Somalia (south to about Beledweyne).
  • griseogularis van Someren, 1919   -  Southern Sudan, eastern Zaire, western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and north-western and (probably this race) south-western Tanzania; this race sometimes said to occur in south-western Ethiopia.
  • pulcher (Neumann, 1900)   -  Extreme south-eastern Sudan, eastern Uganda, Kenya, southern Somalia and northern Tanzania.
  • massaicus Schifter, 1975   -  Central and eastern Tanzania (east to near Dar-es-Salaam).
