Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

princeps (Reichenbach, 1851) - North-eastern Sulawesi.
erythrorhamphus (Stresemann, 1931) - North-western, central and south-western Sulawesi.
regalis (Stresemann, 1932) - South-eastern Sulawesi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Plain-backed Kingfisher (Actenoides regalis).
