Quoy & Gaimard, 1824

Derivation
Da-ce'-lo - anagram of alcedo, L., kingfisher: gaudichaud - Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupre (1789 - 1854), took part in several expiditions as a naturalist, was attched to the Paris museum and worked on the botanical collections from his expiditions

Abundance (Guide)
C

Common on Saibai Island.

Habitat
Rainforests including margins; monsoon forests, mangroves, plantations, rural gardens from sea-level - 500 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).

Lowlands of New Guinea, along with western Papuan Is (Gebe, Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, Misool, Kolepom), all islands in Geelvink Bay, Aru Is, and Heath Is (Sariba) in Milne Bay.

Food
Small insects, reptiles and possibly eggs and young of small birds.

Voice
A load, barking, chopping, 'tchk, tchok, tchk' and af descending, rattling, 'tok-tok-tok-...', sometimes uttered by two or more birds as a duet. Also varied shrieks and rasping sounds.
