Habitat
Drier primary lowland forest, unassociated with water, tall secondary and selectively logged forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m, but chiefly to about 600 m.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Forest destruction through logging and conversion to agriculture is the main threat.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
sangirensis (Meyer, AB & Wiglesworth, 1898) - Sangihe and Talaud Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sangihe Dwarf-Kingfisher (Ceyx sangirensis).
fallax (Schlegel, 1866) - Sulawesi, and offshore Lembeh I.
