Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Azure Kingfisher (Ceyx azureus) and Bismarck Kingfisher (Ceyx websteri), and possibly also Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

quadribrachys Bonaparte, 1850 - Senegambia to western Nigeria (east to R Niger).
guentheri Sharpe, 1892 - South-eastern Nigeria east to extreme southern Sudan and Uganda (L Victoria), and south to northern Angola and north-western Zambia.
