Habitat
Dense tropical and subtropical forest from 600 - 1500m, including areas with bamboo.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh (B), Bhutan (B), Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (B), India (B), Indonesia (B), Laos (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Himalyas to Sumatra, north to south-eastern China.

Habits
Perches still and very upright in the lower and middle canapoy, sallying out for food.

Voice
A series of short, hollow downslurred 'tyaup' notes repeated 5 or more times. A more melocholy 'pluu-du' and grating or croaking alarm 'tewirrr'.

Subspecies
Birds from north-eastern India to northern Myanmar sometimes separated as subspecies hodgsoni, but differences from nominate subspecies and helenae not constant.

The following 11 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythrocephalus (Gould, 1834)   -  Himalayas from Nepal through north-eastern India to Myanmar and western Thailand.
  • helenae Mayr, 1941   -  Northern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
  • yamakanensis Rickett, 1899   -  South-eastern China (south-eastern Sichuan east to Fujian).
  • rosa (Stresemann, 1929)   -  Guangxi (Yao Shan).
  • intermedius (Kinnear, 1925)   -  South-eastern Yunnan, Tonkin, northern Annam and northern Laos.
  • hainanus Ogilvie-Grant, 1900   -  Hainan I.
  • annamensis (Robinson & Kloss, 1919)   -  North-eastern Thailand, southern Laos, southern Annam and Cochinchina.
  • klossi (Robinson, 1915)   -  Bhantat Range in western Cambodia and extreme eastern Thailand, also hills on Koh Chang I (south-eastern Thailand).
  • chaseni Riley, 1934   -  Malay Peninsula.
  • flagrans (Müller, S, 1836)   -  Sumatra.
  • hodgsoni Gould, 1838   -  North-eastern India to eastern Nepal and Bhutan.
