Subspecies
May form a superspecies either with Pavonine Quetzal (Pharomachrus pavoninus) and Golden-headed Quetzal (Pharomachrus auriceps) or with Crested Quetzal (Pharomachrus antisianus) and Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

festatus Bangs, 1899 - Northern Colombia in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and adjacent areas.
fulgidus (Gould, 1838) - Northern Venezuela.
