Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, dry savanna. From 50 - 3,500 m.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Chad.

Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • constantia Sharpe & Ussher, 1872   -  Guinea and Sierra Leone east to Nigeria.
  • arcanum Clancey, 1959   -  L Chad east to Ethiopia and Somalia, and south to northern fringes of equatorial forest east to northern Kenya.
  • brachyurum Chapin, 1923   -  Southern Cameroon east through northern Congo Basin to Rift Valley.
  • rufiventre Dubois, 1896   -  South of R Congo mouth east to southern Uganda, western Tanzania and northern Malawi, and south to northern Namibia, northern Botswana, Zambia, and eastern highlands of Zimbabwe and adjacent Mozambique.
  • littorale van Someren, 1931   -  South-western Somalia, eastern Kenya, eastern Tanzania, northern Mozambique, southern Malawi and Zimbabwe (Mt Selinda).
  • narina (Stephens, 1815)   -  Southern Cape east to southern Mozambique. Winters north to eastern Zimbabwe, Malawi and northern and central Mozambique (north of R Save).
