Subspecies
Generally considered to form a superspecies with Green Woodhoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus) and Violet Woodhoopoe (Phoeniculus damarensis). All sometimes treated as conspecific.
Subspecies abyssinicus has been thought to be a hybrid of subspecies neglectus and subspecies niloticus of Green Woodhoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus), but the two species are said to occur sympatrically without apparently interbreeding in parts of southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
abyssinicus (Neumann, 1903) - Northern Ethiopia and Eritrea.
neglectus (Neumann, 1905) - Central Ethiopia.
somaliensis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1901) - South-eastern Ethiopia, western Somalia and north-eastern Kenya.
