Swainson, 1837
Habitat
Open woodlands, forest edges, groves and thickets, especially in river valleys and parks and gardens.
Southern Algeria (Ahaggar), and dry belt from Senegal east to Ethiopia and Somalia.

Food
Large insects, including their larvae and pupae. Also reptiles and amphibians.
Voice
A low, far-carrying, mellow 'oo-oo-oo' song. Cawing in contact.
Nest
In a hole of a tree, but occasionaly in a hole in a building or wall, sometimes lined with grass.
Eggs (Guide)
Clutch Size: 7 - 8
Color: greyish-olive, marked with pores.
Subspecies
Not recognized by BirdLife International. Considered by some authors as a subspecies of Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops).
