Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Rhyticeros. May form a superspecies with Knobbed Hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix), Wrinkled Hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus corrugatus) and Writhed Hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus leucocephalus). Often considered conspecific with Writhed Hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus leucocephalus), but differs in plumage, bare parts, and in degree of sexual dimorphism in colour of facial skin.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Visayan Hornbill (Penelopides panini) which is much smaller, pale base to tail and male has whitish head.
