Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Visayan Hornbill (Penelopides panini), Luzon Hornbill (Penelopides manillae) and Mindanao Hornbill (Penelopides affinis), and all formerly considered conspecific. Sulawesi Hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus exarhatus) also treated as conspecific by some authors.
