Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with African Grey Hornbill (Lophoceros nasutus). Subspecies occasionally hybridize at western edge of Luangwa Valley, in Zambia.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pallidirostris (Hartlaub & Finsch, 1870) - EC, central and north-eastern Angola, southern Zaire, and eastern Zambia (west of Luangwa Valley).
neumanni Reichenow, 1894 - Zambia (eastern from Luangwa Valley), Malawi, south-eastern Tanzania and northern Mozambique.
