Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rufous-capped Nunlet (Nonnula ruficapilla) and Chestnut-headed Nunlet (Nonnula amaurocephala). Nominate subspecies somewhat variable in colour, and is thought possibly to comprise more than one taxon. Subspecies pallescens has on occasion been considered to belong to Rufous-capped Nunlet (Nonnula ruficapilla), although both geographically and morphologically they are decidedly distant.

stulta Wetmore, 1953 - Central Panama to extreme north-western Colombia.
pallescens Todd, 1919 - Caribbean lowlands of northern Colombia.
