Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

minor Sassi, 1911 - North-eastern Brazil (northern Maranh�o). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Lesser Crescent-chested Puffbird (Malacoptila minor).
striata (Spix, 1824) - Eastern and south-eastern Brazil (southern Bahia south to Santa Catarina).
