Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Russet-throated Puffbird (Hypnelus ruficollis), and commonly treated as conspecific owing to hybridization in Maracaibo region of Venezuela and in Catatumbo lowlands of Colombia. However, hybridization apparently rather limited, with most individuals belonging clearly to one or the other of these well-distinguished forms, and treatment as separate species seems the most realistic approach, pending in-depth studies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bicinctus (Gould, 1837) - Interior north-eastern Colombia (in llanos), and northern Venezuela (south to north-eastern Bolívar and north-western Amazonas).
stoicus Wetmore, 1939 - Margarita I, off northern Venezuela.
