Subspecies
Subspecies striatipectus may be a separate species, on basis of morphology, but vocalizations apparently similar but further study required in zone of probable contact, in Pantanal.

Proposed subspecies parvirostris (central Brazil) not reliably separable from nominate; pallidigula (south-western Brazil) synonymous with striatipectus, showing only minor, apparently clinal, differences.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

maculatus (Gmelin, 1788) - North-eastern and central Brazil (to south-western Mato Grosso).
striatipectus (P. L. Sclater, 1854) - South-central and south-eastern Bolivia (Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Santa Cruz) and south-central Brazil (western Mato Grosso do Sul) south to western and central Paraguay and north-western Argentina (south to C�rdoba).
