Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From 240 - 1,100 m.
Brazil (B).
South-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Parana).

Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and fragmentation is the main threat.

Voice
A complex series of ascending whistles mixed with raspy notes, often delivered in groups. Also a 'wheet' call.

Subspecies
Close to Brachygalba , particularly Brown Jacamar (Brachygalba lugubris ), but isolated by foot morphology, elongated head feathers and gregarious behaviour.
No subspecies.
