Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Tawny-tufted Toucanet (Selenidera nattereri), Gould's Toucanet (Selenidera gouldii) and Spot-billed Toucanet (Selenidera maculirostris). Guianan Toucanet (Selenidera piperivora) and Yellow-eared Toucanet (Selenidera spectabilis) have sometimes been included too, but these two appear to differ from others in voice and display behaviour. Subspecies langsdorffii has sometimes been considered a separate species, but interbreeds with nominate subspecies in northern Peru (upper R Ucayali and R Huallaga), where intergrades occur.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • reinwardtii (Wagler, 1827)   -  East-central and south-eastern Colombia (along Brazil border) south to eastern Ecuador and central-northern and north-eastern Peru.
  • langsdorffii (Wagler, 1827)   -  North-central and eastern Peru, and western Brazil (eastern, south of R Solimíµes, to R Purus and probably upper R Madeira), south to north-western Bolivia (west of R Beni). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Green-billed Toucanet (Selenidera langsdorffii).
