Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Crimson-rumped Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus haematopygus) and Yellow-browed Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus huallagae), and possibly closer to latter. Putative subspecies borealis of north-central Peru (Junín) considered invalid, as appears to be based on individual, not geographical, variation. Species name often listed as coeruleicinctus, but original spelling, coeruleicinctis, must stand.
