Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 300 - 2,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Groove-billed Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus sulcatus). Also related, less closely, to Emerald Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus). Form described from central Peru as nigrirostris now lumped within nominate derbianus.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • derbianus Gould, 1835   -  Extreme southern Colombia southern along eastern slope of Andes to central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
  • duidae Chapman, 1929   -  Mountains of southern Venezuela in Amazonas and western Bolí­var, and adjacent northern Brazil.
  • whitelianus (Salvin and Godman, 1882)   -  Mountains of southern Venezuela (south-eastern Bolí­var) and northern Guyana.
  • osgoodi Blake, 1941   -  Southern Guyana (Acary Mts) and Surinam (Wilhelmina Mts).
