Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Groove-billed Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus sulcatus). Also related, less closely, to Emerald Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus). Form described from central Peru as nigrirostris now lumped within nominate derbianus.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

derbianus Gould, 1835 - Extreme southern Colombia southern along eastern slope of Andes to central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
duidae Chapman, 1929 - Mountains of southern Venezuela in Amazonas and western Bol��var, and adjacent northern Brazil.
whitelianus (Salvin and Godman, 1882) - Mountains of southern Venezuela (south-eastern Bol��var) and northern Guyana.
osgoodi Blake, 1941 - Southern Guyana (Acary Mts) and Surinam (Wilhelmina Mts).
