Subspecies
Not particularly closely related to others of genus. May represent connecting link between genera Tricholaema and Lybius. Subspecies rather well marked for a species with small range.

Proposed subspecies senafensis in north-east of range, gardullensis in western and south-west, and squamatus in eastern considered untenable.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

thiogaster Neumann, 1903 - Far north-eastern Ethiopia and Eritrea.
undatus (R�ppell, 1837) - North-west to central Ethiopia.
leucogenys (Blundell & Lovat, 1899) - South-central to south-western Ethiopia.
salvadorii Neumann, 1903 - South-eastern Ethiopia.
