Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 2,100 m.
Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda.

Subspecies
Closely related to Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus) and the superspecies formed by Red-fronted Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus pusillus) and Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus chrysoconus).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- chrysopygus (Shelley, 1889) - Sierra Leone and south-eastern Guinea east to southern Ghana.
- flavimentum (Verreaux, J & Verreaux, E, 1851) - Togo east to southern Central African Republic and southern Uganda, and south to central Zaire.
- subsulphureus (Fraser, 1843) - Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
