Proposed subspecies borneonense (Borneo except north-east) considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
malabaricum Whistler, 1934 - Western India.
intermedium (Blyth, 1845) - Bangladesh and Assam to central and eastern Myanmar, south-central China (south-western Yunnan) and northern Vietnam, and south to Thailand (except peninsular) and Cochinchina.
everetti (Tweeddale, 1878) - Western and central Philippines (Balabac, Palawan and Calamian Is). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Spot-throated Flameback (Dinopium everetti).
javanense (Ljungh, 1797) - Peninsular Thailand south to Sumatra, including Riau Archipelago, western Java and Borneo.
raveni Riley, 1927 - North-eastern Borneo and offshore islets.
exsul (Hartert, 1901) - Eastern Java and Bali.
borneonense (Dubois, AJC, 1897) - North-eastern Borneo and nearby islands.
Similar Species
Buff-spotted Flameback (Chrysocolaptes lucidus) which has a longer bill, less pointier crest, white hind-neck, and white iris, and Olive-backed Woodpecker (Dinopium rafflesii) which has greener upperparts, lacks any red on the rump and lacks black markings on the underparts.
