Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 2,200 m.
Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo, Uganda.
Vagrant to Senegal.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-backed Honeybird (Prodotiscus zambesiae), and has been considered conspecific. The two possibly meet in Angola, where the form referred to as "lathburyi" appears intermediate. Further study is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- flavodorsalis Bannerman, 1923 - Sierra Leone east, probably disjunctly, to south-western Nigeria.
- insignis (Cassin, 1856) - South-eastern Nigeria south to northern Angola, and disjunctly eastern in Zaire to southern Sudan and western Kenya.
