Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Pallid Honeyguide (Indicator meliphilus) which is very similar in size and vocally, and responds readily to playback of present species' song. Was long confused with Least Honeyguide (Indicator exilis), but differs vocally. Subspecies poorly known. Form propinquus from Cameroon originally thought to be a distinct species, but now considered a synonym of nominate willcocksi. Birds collected in northern Liberia (Wonegizi) thought to be Least Honeyguide (Indicator exilis), but might in fact refer to present species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • ansorgei Grant, CHB, 1915   -  Guinea-Bissau.
  • willcocksi Alexander, 1901   -  Sierre Leone east to southern Nigeria, southern Cameroon and western Uganda, south to Gabon and central and central-eastern Zaire.
  • hutsoni Bannerman, 1928   -  North-central Nigeria east to southern Chad and south-western Sudan.
