Subspecies
Closest relatives are probably Yellow-rumped Honeyguide (Indicator xanthonotus) and Yellow-footed Honeyguide (Melignomon eisentrauti). Thought to have derived from early Asian invasion of Indicator from Africa, and thus from same ancestral stock as Yellow-rumped Honeyguide (Indicator xanthonotus). Bright yellow in plumage and short outer rectrix exhibited by both Asian species, and this combination otherwise shared only with African Yellow-footed Honeyguide (Melignomon eisentrauti).
