Habitat
Secluded and overgrown still-water pools, marshes and swamps in lowland forest and tall grasslands, particularly in areas subject to inundation. In winter, also lagoons adjoining large rivers.
Bangladesh (E) (B), India (E) (B), Myanmar (E) (B), Nepal (E) (B).
India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Rarely in Nepal.

Population
Estimated population is <50 (2010).
Status CR
Possibly extinct. Last reliable sightings were in 1949. Possible sightings in Myanmar between April 2003 and December 2006.

Habits
Shy and secretive. Possibly nocturnal. Outside of the breeding season often seen in small groups and occasionally flocks of from 30 - 40.
Voice
Females utter a weak 'quack'. Males utter a weak whistle'.
