Habitat
Breeds beside fast-flowing rivers and streams, and alpine lakes, but also on slow-flowing rivers.
Indonesia (B) (NB), Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).
Mountains of New Guinea; occurrence on Waigeo I (off north-western New Guinea) doubtful.
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 20,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Predation by dogs, habitat degradation through increasing human pressure and siltation, mining and logging, hunting are the main threats.
