Locally common. Sedentary and locally nomadic.
Habitat
Tropical lagoons, lakes, dams with water-lilies and other semi-emergent waterplants. In the wet season shallower swamps of spike-rush and wild rice.
Australia (B), Indonesia, Papua New Guinea (B), Timor-Leste (NB).
Southern New Guinea, tropical northern Australia.
 
Tropical northern and eastern Australia, west to about Broome, WA and south to about Rockhampton, Qld.

Estimated population is 50,000 - 200,000 (2010).

In a hollow of a tree, sometimes lined with down. Never on the ground.
Eggs (Guide )
8 - 12; hard-shelled, smooth, lustrous cream or white; blunt-ellipsoid; about 44 x 32 mm. Incubation: 26 days; by female.

Precocial, nidifugous.
