Habitat
Stagnant or slow-flowing natural and artificial wetlands, within or adjacent to evergreen, deciduous or swamp forests. From sea-level - 1,400 m.

Range (Guide)

Bangladesh (B), Cambodia (B), India (B), Indonesia (B), Laos (B), Malaysia (E), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Relict populations in India, Thailand, Bangladesh, Burma, Viet Nam and Sumatra. Formerly more widespread throughout range, and also in Java.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction, degradation and disturbance are the main threats.

Voice
Flight call is a series of vibrant honks, often ending with a nasal whistle. Also single, short, harsh honks.

Recently included in tribe Anatini by some authors. Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Asarcornis.

Similar Species
Female African Comb Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos) which has mostly whitish underparts and all dark wings.
