Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Ocellated Quail (Cyrtonyx ocellatus) and may be conspecfic. Subspecies sallei sometimes considered full species.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
mearnsi Nelson, 1900 - Scattered populations in southern USA (western and central Texas, southern New Mexico and southern Arizona) and northern and north-western Mexico. Also reported from Nayarit, central-western Mexico.
montezumae (Vigors, 1830) - Tamaulipas south through Hildago to Oaxaca, eastern Mexico; sometimes claimed not to occur in Oaxaca.
sallei Verreaux, J, 1859 - Southern Michoacán, Guerrero and western Oaxaca, southern Mexico. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Spot-breasted Quail (Cyrtonyx sallei).
rowleyi Phillips, AR, 1966 - Guerrero and Oaxaca (Sierra de Miahuatlán), Mexico.
