Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata). Some debate over status and relationship of subspecies douglasii and impedita. Validity of languens also questionable.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

bensoni Ridgway, 1887 - Sonora, north-western Mexico.
languens (Friedmann, 1943) - Western Chihuahua, north-western Mexico.
douglasii (Vigors, 1829) - Southern Sonora, Sinaloa, north-western Durango and northern Nayarit, western Mexico.
impedita (Friedmann, 1943) - Central and southern Nayarit, western Mexico.
teres (Friedmann, 1943) - North-western Jalisco, west-central Mexico.
vanderbilti (Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1944) - Tres Marias Is. (off west-central Mexico).
