Subspecies
Subspecies palmeri considered synonymous with nominate.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • pictus (Douglas, 1829)   -  South-western Washington to central California, western USA. Also (probably introduced) Vancouver I, south-western Canada, and western Washington, north-western USA.
  • plumifer (Gould, 1837)   -  Southern Washington to western Nevada and north-eastern and north-central California, western USA.
  • russelli Miller, AH, 1946   -  Southern California, western USA.
  • eremophilus van Rossem, 1937   -  Southern and west-central California and south-western Nevada, western USA, to extreme northern Baja California, north-western Mexico.
  • confinis Anthony, 1889   -  Northern Baja California, Mexico.
