Habitat
Broadleaf forests dominated by oaks, usually with a dense canopy and sparse undergrowth. Also conifer forest and scrub, farmland adjacent to forest edges.
Northern and central China, locally from Inner Mongolia south through Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui and northern Hubei to Sichuan; range much reduced. Introduced to several areas, e.g. Britain (possibly extinct), France and Hawaii, but most of these populations are probably not self sustaining; well established in Czech Republic.
