Subspecies
Subspecies bethelae may be a clinal form of biddulphi. Many subspecies regarded as intergrades, raising doubts about validity of subspecific taxonomy; a morph of subspecies darwini without chestnut band on underparts was considered a different subspecies, styani.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • castanea Gould, 1854   -  Eastern Afghanistan east to Pakistan (Chitral).
  • biddulphi Marshall, GFL, 1879   -  Kashmir.
  • bethelae R. L. Fleming, 1947   -  North-western India (Kulu Valley).
  • macrolopha (Lesson, 1829)   -  Western Himalayas, from Kashmir to Kumaon.
  • nipalensis Gould, 1854   -  Western Nepal.
  • meyeri Madarász, 1886   -  South-central China (western and south-western Sichuan east to north-western Yunnan); extinct in south-eastern Tibet.
  • ruficollis David & Oustalet, 1877   -  Central China (southern Gansu, Shaanxi and western Sichuan).
  • xanthospila Gray, GR, 1864   -  North-eastern China (Shaanxi Neast through western Hebei and south-eastern Inner Mongolia to south-western Manchuria).
  • joretiana Heude, 1883   -  Central-eastern China (Anhui).
  • darwini Swinhoe, 1872   -  Central and eastern China (Hubei, south-eastern Sichuan, Zhejiang and Fujian); extinct in north-western Fujian and northern Guangdong.
