In the breeding season moist oak and rhododendron forest with dense undergrowth and bamboo clumps, mixed forest, scrub and densely vegetated ravines. From 1,800 - 4,250 m.

Himalayas in northern India from Garhwal east through Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and south-eastern Tibet.
