Subspecies
Some authors include present species in a superspecies with Chestnut-bellied Partridge (Arborophila javanica) and White-faced Partridge (Arborophila orientalis), and all three are sometimes considered conspecific. Others attribute morphological similarities to convergent evolution. Sometimes Sichuan Partridge (Arborophila rufipectus) or Bornean Partridge (Arborophila hyperythra), or both, also included in the superspecies. Birds of Guangxi (central-southern China) probably belong to subspecies henrici, but sometimes ascribed to nominate subspecies.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
brunneopectus (Blyth, 1855) - Central-southern China (south-western Yunnan) through eastern Burma and northern Laos to western Thailand.
henrici (Oustalet, 1896) - Northern and central Vietnam; probably also central-southern China (Guangxi).
