Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland. From sea-level - 1,850 m.

Range (Guide)
Angola (B), Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea (B), Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sâo Tomé e Principe, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Gambia, Ghana, Lesotho, Oman.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Rain Quail (Coturnix coromandelica).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • arabica Bannerman, 1929   -  Southern Arabia.
  • delegorguei Delegorgue, 1847   -  Ivory Coast to Ethiopia and south to South Africa (eastern Cape Province), excluding forest belt and arid south-western Africa; apparently only migrant to western Africa.
  • histrionica Hartlaub, 1849   -  Sío Tomé, Gulf of Guinea.
