Subspecies
Formerly included in Dusky Scrubfowl (Megapodius freycinet). Generally considered to form part of the Dusky Scrubfowl (Megapodius freycinet) superspecies; apparently very close to Nicobar Scrubfowl (Megapodius nicobariensis).

Population of Mindanao frequently placed in possible subspecies tabon, but affinities of these birds uncertain. Subspecies dillwyni sometimes used for birds of northern Philippines. Birds of Sulawesi were allocated distinct subspecies gilbertii, but not reliably distinguishable from nominate. Subspecies balukensis described from Balukbaluk I (south-west of Mindanao), but validity doubtful.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • pusillus Tweeddale, 1878   -  Northern and eastern Philippines.
  • cumingii Dillwyn, 1853   -  Northern Borneo, Sulawesi, south-western Philippines.
  • sanghirensis Schlegel, 1880   -  Sangihe Is, Talaud Is.
  • dillwyni Tweeddale, 1878   -  Northern Philippines (Luzon, Mindoro, Marinduque, and Babuyan Islands).
  • tabon Hachisuka, 1931   -  South-eastern Philippines (eastern Mindanao).
  • gilbertii Gray, GR, 1862   -  Sulawesi, Talisei, Tendila, Lembeh and Togian islands.
  • talautensis Roselaar, 1994   -  Talaud Islands (northern Moluccas).
