Subspecies
All members of genus form superspecies. Crax nigra is a synonym.
Has hybridized in captivity with Great Curassow (Crax rubra). Subspecies erythrognatha, described on basis of cere colour, not unanimously accepted. Birds from extreme eastern Venezuela are intermediates, showing rich yellow bill with some orange shading.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
erythrognatha Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1877 - Eastern Colombia and Venezuela south of R Orinoco, except extreme east.
alector Linnaeus, 1766 - Extreme eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Brazil north of R Amazon.
